Does RE work: Small scale practitioner inquiry funding

The book based on the AHRC/ESRC “Does Religious Education Work?” won the Society for Educational Studies book prize and the research team have donated the prize money of £1,000 to NATRE to fund a small-scale practitioner inquiry into one of the themes raised by the project. These include:

•The contested aims and purposes of Religious Education in schools;

•The relationship between Religious Education, values and ethos in schools;

•The role of knowledge of religious texts in Religious Education;

•Post-16 examinations and their impact on the curriculum and pedagogy of Religious Education;

•The use of textbooks;

•The relationship between Religious Education as an academic subject and expectations that the subject will enhance particular values, dispositions or meet pastoral needs of the wider school;

•The language used in the classroom to discuss transcendence, truth claims and ‘big questions’.

Preference will be given to applications that demonstrate a clear plan to disseminate findings within the professional community, including NATRE dissemination sources e.g. Professional Reflection, to promote the impact of their work.

Applications should include an outline of the planned inquiry (up to 500 words) including how the work will be disseminated and a budget. Applications should be submitted to [email protected] and be received by Friday 16 October.
